  • I have tried everything available to treat coccyx pain. Now the ortho surgeon wants to remove it. He says he has done many coccygestomies. It is done out pt. he said recovery time is short and I can sit right after surgery. He said 98% of his pt.’s have relief after surgery. Now everywhere I look on line says recovery time is long and no sitting right after surgery and pain from it anywhere from 3 months to a year. He also said I could go right back to work afterwords. Is this right? I am healthy no medical problems. 56 years young. Suffering with coccyx pain for 3-4 years.

    • First of all, I’m very sorry to hear about your tailbone pain (coccyx pain).

While of course I cannot give medical advice online like this, I can say that it seems highly unusual that your surgeon says that you would be able to begin sitting again immediately after the surgery to remove the coccyx (coccygectomy). I’ve provided thousands of evaluations and treatments for patients with tailbone pain, in addition to reading hundreds of articles on the topic (and writing dozens of articles, chapters, etc.) and I have *never* heard of patients being told to begin sitting on the surgical site immediately after the surgery.

Typically, most patients are told not to sit for 6-8 weeks after the surgery. (Sitting on the toilet for a couple of minutes a few times a day when nature calls would be the exception to this rule.)

If your proposed surgeon is truly obtaining the kind of excellent relief and super-fast recovery times that he is telling you, then I definitely think that he should publish his techniques and outcomes within the peer-reviewed medical literature.
